The 10 Questions Every Builder Should Ask a Steel Window & Steel Door Vendor

Have you ever wondered how to head off fenestration problems in your build before they happen? If this has been a past pain point for you, it probably started the same way:

  • Everything is proceeding as planned…until it’s not.

  • The jobsite gets crowded with crates you didn’t ask for.

  • One missing unit holds up an entire build phase.

  • And suddenly you’re the one explaining delays to the client.

Did you know that most issues with fenestration don’t come from the product itself, but they do come from everything else around it - the logistics, the coordination and the installation.

Before you commit to a steel fenestration vendor, here are the questions experienced builders ask us to avoid delays, jobsite chaos, and expensive surprises.

1. Can you deliver my steel windows and steel doors in phases? Or does everything ship at once?

If the answer is “everything ships together,” that’s a bit of a red flag. At Vintage Steel, we can ship in installments when you’re ready. If your project doesn’t move all at once, your window delivery shouldn’t have to either!

2. What happens if one unit is delayed?

Will my entire order be held up? Or can the rest of the project keep moving? This one question can make or break your schedule, so it’s important to know upfront.

3. How is delivery coordinated with my build schedule?

Is the steel window and steel door company you’re working with just booking freight, or are they actually managing timing, sequencing and your building site conditions?

4. What will show up on my jobsite (and when?)

Ask specifically:

  • How many deliveries can I expect?

  • How much material at once?

  • What’s expected to be installed vs stored?

If the company can’t answer clearly, it would be reasonable to assume that your project’s at risk.

5. What happens if a steel window arrives damaged, incorrectly sized, or different from specification?

This is a great question to ask. It’s not about the warranty language so much as it is about the real process and what happens when the unexpected happens.

  • Who do you call?

  • How fast can it be fixed?

  • Where does the replacement come from?

6. Where is the final product actually completed (and quality-checked?)

If you don’t see the units until they land on your jobsite, you’re taking on all the risk. At Vintage Steel, no shipment leaves our facility without an end-to-end quality check, and our team inspects the product at every step of the process, from unloading to installation.

7. Who owns the problem when something goes wrong?

Is it the distributor? The manufacturer? Is it someone overseas? Or is there one clear point person who is responsible for everything based here in the USA (that’s who we are for our clients)?

8. How do you support installation?

Do they just drop material, or do they:

  • Provide guidance?

  • Help you with sequencing?

  • Show up when they’re supposed to?

Poor installation can ruin even the best product.

9. How much jobsite handling should I expect?

More crates can mean more movement and more risk. Ask what they do to minimize:

  • Re-handling

  • Storage time

  • Exposure to weather

10. How do you protect my schedule if (or when) things change?

The real question isn’t “what’s your lead time?” It would be better to ask, “What happens when the job doesn’t go exactly as planned? How do we handle that?”

Every steel window and steel door company will tell you their product is great. That’s not the key differentiator. The real question you should be thinking about is: Do they make your job easier or harder once the project starts? Remember the right partner doesn’t just deliver windows; they protect your schedule, your site and your reputation. We’d love to show you how.
